I think this comes from the rune ᚹ (ƿynn) ƿhich I think looks cooler than ƿhat ƿe ended up ƿith. Anyƿay, ƿ is so much cooler than [[w]] and i ƿish it had stuck around. I mean, I guess it could be confused ƿith [[p]], but ƿhatever.
