The Silk Road stretched across Central Asia and into Iran and the Middle East. In Syria, it split into two branches. The northern branch entered Türkiye while the southern branch traversed down Palestine and into Egypt. Though silk was a major commodity, the Silk Road also played a role in the development of lutes such as the pipa, deriving from the Middle Eastern oud.
