German Democratic Republic

When Germany was split, the east was governed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, or DDR in German). We simply called it East Germany. Of course, the west and east are now in one piece again. Once part of the Eastern Bloc, the German Democratic Republic was described as a socialist state until 1989, the year before the merger.
