From Cheyenne, Wyoming, he is one of a type of simple articulated 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive manufactured by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) between 1941 and 1944 and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad in revenue service until 1962.

Big Boy and his 24 brothers, also called "Big Boy", were built to haul freight over the Wasatch Range between Ogden, Utah, and Green River, Wyoming. In the late 1940s, they were reassigned to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where they hauled freight over Sherman Hill to Laramie, Wyoming. They were the only locomotives to use a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement: four-wheel leading truck for stability entering curves, two sets of eight driving wheels and a four-wheel trailing truck to support the large firebox.

On September 10, 2022, Big Boy mysteriously disappeared out of Union Pacific's Cheyenne, WY shops and into an unknown universe with the rest of the contestants. He was noted for being very big for a contestant. Meanwhile back in Cheyenne, his companion, No. 844, an FEF-3 engine, has been chosen to replace Big Boy with his excursions. Initially, not much was known as to how Big Boy can move freely with barely any tracks in the TCW2 universe, until it was discovered that tracks can mysteriously appear and disappear, thus enabling Big Boy to move freely. His supply of oil and water can also magically refill within a second.
