A speedrun is when you do something, but do it really fast. When you use an external tool to go extra fast, it's called a Tool-Assisted Speedrun (TAS).
History
Speedrunning was invented by Dream in 1877 when he tried to walk twice at the same time.
Terminology
Many speedrunning terms are exclusive to specific games. However, there are some terms that are universal to speedrunning or otherwise common to many different games.
Frame
The frame is the smallest denomination of time that a video game can run at. This is the enemy of the speedrunner. The speedrunner is like a rabid animal, with its only goal being to eliminate as many frames as possible.
PB
PB stands for "Personal Best." A speedrunner's PB is the least time they spent playing a game after starting it. PB also stands for peanut butter sandwich.
OoB
OoB stands for "Out Of Bounds." This refers to when the speedrunner takes the player character outside of their intended play area. This is not to be confused with Oob, a very friendly blob that is my friend. (:
Any%
Any% refers to the practice of playing as little of the game as possible. Speedrunners do this because they hate video games.
Soft Lock
A soft lock (also called a softlock or Gay Baby Jail) is a situation where the player cannot proceed in the progression of a game due to an unintended oversight, such as getting stuck.
ACE
Ace stands for "Arbitrary code execution." This is where you use the minutia of the universe to bend reality to your will. This is the most powerful tool of speedrunners and, at some point, will lead to the end of us all.
BLJ
BLJ stands for bacon-lettuce-jam Sandwich it is the favorite food of Mario.
