Lili Zanotto is a violent little girl with psychic powers who appears in the television show Psychonauts. She is known for her high-level weird little girl swag, as well as her loyalty to her loved ones and her penchant for acts of wanton destruction. She is ten years old, and is currently stationed with her boyfriend Razputin Aquato at the base of the Psychonauts 2. Much like Raz, Lili's early appearances were marked by significantly less aggression and weird little girl energy, but her first fully canonical appearance in S1E5: The Rhombus of Ruin cemented her ongoing characterization. She is also known for her own high levels of transgender swag.
Character
Creation
Lili Zanotto was created by Erik Wolpaw, creator of Psychonauts. After his struggle with realizing Razputin in the physical plane, Wolpaw designed Lili in the aftermath of his possession. Allegedly, she was not originally created to be a romantic interest for Raz, with Wolpaw stating:
"After what happened to me, I really wanted to find my creative energy again, and I only took a few days off to get a blood transfusion before I was back in my office. Thankfully, designing Lili was a lot less of a struggle. After I found the character angle of being a weird little girl, she came to life fairly easily. Originally, she was envisioned as a supporting character by herself, who would assist Raz on his adventures, but after she was realized, Lili quickly gained a mind of her own. We can't control her any more."
To that end, the animators and artists on Psychonauts found Lili difficult to script for. She could be drawn voluntarily with little issue, but once she was placed in a scene or sequence, she would do actions of her own accord based on her own personal decisions. Upsetting her by attempting to draw her into a scenario or sequence she didn't agree with had a range of consequences, from Lili simply leaving the shot to real-life cases of arson. It didn't take long for the production team to learn to let her do her own thing, and burn casualties from the Psychonauts studio reduced greatly after that.
Portrayal
In the credits of each episode, Lili's voice is credited to Richard Horvitz, but when asked if he really voiced her (as she doesn't sound much like his usual range), Horvitz managed to chew through his seatbelt and escape.
