The soft hyphen is a character in the Unicode block Latin-1 Supplement with the codepoint U+00AD. It is used for potential line breaks in the middle of a word. By default, it displays as an invisible character with zero width, but if a line break is placed at it it displays as a hyphen. This page has some soft hyphens on it. Resize the window and see if you can spot them!
