Kinning, is the act of closely identifying to a character, person, or object. While modern usage of kinning often comes with a variety of different terms, it is most commonly associated with identifying with characters in media. Most users who kins many different characters tracks them on a personal "kin list", held on different forms of media, with more common platforms being pages on the social medias Tumblr and Carrd.
Factkinning
More frequently known as "identity theft", Factkinning is the act of identifying as historical figures, performers, or otherwise, any real person outside of media. While very uncommon, factkinning is known for frequently garnering controversy online as a result of identifying as someone's very real identity. Most notable factkins include the founding fathers, as a result of the release of Lin-Manuel Miranda's 2015 musical, Hamilton, and various serial killers.
Functions
Kinning, especially factkinning, is commonly used in subterfuge and warfare, allowing one to assume a false identity or persona to gain advantage over an opponent through the use of identity fraud and being unidentifiable through the use of common aliases. However, it is important to note that using deception in this way is generally considered unethical and can have serious consequences if discovered with many "kinnies" being charged with identity fraud. Limitations
While a frequent tactic of kinning is the usage of assuming a false identity in the usage of warfare, common limitations of kinning are the risks of identity theft, the potential for harm to oneself and others, and the fact that kinning does cause one to assume the exact identity of the chosen character. In addition, the use of false identities can lead to legal and ethical issues. As such, it is important for one to carefully consider the potential risks and consequences before engaging in any form of kinning or identity deception [citation needed 1]
