True Form >>
Hatsune Miku (初音ミク) is a world-famous Vocaloid, the creator of the video game Minecraft, and the first sound of the future. She is a virtual idol and celebrity, with a vast worldwide fandom, having toured the world and sung many live concerts, as well as singing hundreds of thousands of songs. She is the most popular vocal synth character, prized for her combination of synthetic and natural characteristics.
Miku is the first of the Character Vocal series as CV01, and was followed by Kagamine Rin and Kagamine Len both as CV02, and Megurine Luka as CV03. The series was preceded by MEIKO and KAITO as separate but linked characters. After release in late August of 2007, she received additional upgrades in the form of the Appends for Vocaloid 2, and later full suite upgrades for Vocaloid 3 and 4. She was later ported to Piapro's New Type engine and Vocaloid 6. Her V6 was initially released exclusive to existing owners as a beta late in 2025, slated for full release in the first half of 2026. She is also one of 5 voices on the Vocaloid Keyboard.
Character
Hatsune Miku is primarily a conduit for the personality of the artists and viewers, with millions of different interpretations from anyone who has ever encountered her, being able to adapt and convey anything. Outside of songs, she is commonly depicted as a friendly benevolent figure, of status similar to that of a lesser deity. In mainline scriptures, Miku is warm and positive, being very supporting of her friends, such as of Kasane Teto's recent success on Synthesizer V. Her status of mortality is uncertain, as she is a deific memetic figure from the future. Certain songs bring mentions of her disappearance, but iunno, I'm pretty sure she's still here.
Design
Hatsune Miku's appearance has changed over time, but has kept major core tenets. Her hair and eyes are a distinct aqua color, with her hair in very long twintails held up and ornamented by squares in pink. Much of her clothing is in black with aqua trim. She wears a medium to short skirt, a sleeveless shirt with an aqua tie, boots morphing into high socks, and detached sleeves, with a headset and connected microphone. On Vocaloid 2, her shirt is a medium light grey, replaced with a white shirt with detail lines in Vocaloid 3 and after. Her left arm near the shoulder has "01" tattooed in red, referencing her Character Vocal designation, and her detached sleeves go down the rest of her arms.
The sleeves feature control panels very similar to the Yamaha DX7; In all revisions, there are two rows of rectangular buttons down half the length of the sleeve, beginning with a block similar to the aqua preset selection buttons of the DX7, followed by three pairs of buttons per row. In Vocaloid 2 and 3 designs, there is a graphic below the two rows of buttons, referencing the ADSR and routing/algorithm control of the DX7, but featuring Tetris shapes instead of the specific algorithm controls. In Vocaloid 4 this panel was simplified as the sleeve was a tighter fit at the end, and New Type's design simplified this extensively.
The rest of Miku's clothing features similar details, with the skirt having three MIDI plugs towards the center, with a blue light for parameter change and a red light for error, alongside various panels or buttons scattered about depending on the Miku revision. On Vocaloid 2, 3, and New Type, the upper part of her boot/sock features piano keys, which on Vocaloid 4 was moved to her skirt, replaced with a 'Voice Change' graphic for switching between Appends. Her shirt on Vocaloid 2 and 3 features an LCD in a badge's position, replaced on V4 with coloured rectangular buttons similar to the rest of them. On New Type, this panel is a visualiser of notes and pitch curve, with track data. There is a light at the front center of each knee, and a light placed somewhere on the boot depending on revision.
Miku's full attire maintains a referential yet futuristic appearance and function throughout, and has gone on to influence a large amount of vocal synth culture, both through derivative designs like Kasane Teto, and through characters made to stand in contrast with the synthetic idols, like GUMI, Tohoku Kiritan, Hanakuma Chifuyu, or any of the numerous thankless, faceless background characters from Yamaha or Dreamtonics.
