An ATM machine (also called RAS syndrome) is a phrase which includes an abbreviation followed by the word which the final letter in the abbreviation stands for, meaning that if you expand out the abbreviation, the last word is repeated twice. Possibly the most famous example of this is "ATM machine" which expands out to "automatic teller machine machine".

Backwards ATM machines

In these examples, the first letter has the word that would be repeated twice when the abbreviation is expanded.
