The Carolina Reaper is a chili pepper developed by Ed Currie in 2013. Like the habanero, it is a cultivar of Capsicum chinense. The Carolina Reaper was the hottest chili pepper in the world until 2023, when Currie's Pepper X, another cultiar of C. chinense, was bred.
