The chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), or chimp for short, is a species of great ape indigenous to the tropical forests and savannas of Africa. It has four distinct subspecies native to their own respective regions. The chimpanzee, alongside its smaller cousin, the bonobo, is the closest living relative of humans. Though chimpanzees can be dangerous when provoked, they can also be friendly to those who do not provoke them, including Jane Goodall.
