A rhythm game is a game where players are challenged with a series of inputs to press in time with music. Players are graded based on their accuracy of presses to the music unless you're playing Guitar Hero because Guitar Hero is funking stupid

History
Some hardcore developer decided it'd be kinda fun to press their keys to the beat of their favourite music. A lot of people agreed and made all of these awesome games. So cool![1]
The music in these games are great!
Nowadays, many people speedrun these games by cranking up the speed and just going ham on their controllers/keyboards/toaster! Yeah! So sick! This is a good challenge and good[2] for your ears, because your ears get to enjoy some sick beats while you turn your fingers into toast. Totally worth it, of course. Okay... I'm about to jam to some funking beats.

Rhythm games can be categorized by several different factors, including the control schemes that they use, their developers, the mechanics they have aside from rhythm gameplay, or the platform they're released on.
Arcade games
These are games..in the Arcade.
The simple fact there's no such thing as a standard arcade cab means arcade game controls have the option to get much more creative. This is visible in the richness of arcade subgenres such as step games like DDR, DJ games like IIDX and Sound Voltex and even washing machine games like Wacca.
Mobile games
These are games..in the Mobile.
Thanks to the freeform nature of touchscreen as well as the ubiquity of mobile game microtransactions, the Pone provided a healthy ecosystem for the rhythm game to thrive in. Thanks to that, species like the Arcaea and the Cytus can live peacefully and in harmony mostly
Gacha/idol games
