Mate (stylized in all caps) was a playable character in The Wiki Camp 2. They were announced as a DLC fighter on January 13, 2023 to coincide with the 2023 MIT Mystery Hunt. In their home series, Mate is an artificial intelligence created by teammate that can create an unlimited amount of puzzles and assist solvers in solving them, by offering hints for specific puzzles, as well as giving out tools for various encoding methods, including Braille, Morse code, Pigpen, A1Z26, and international maritime signal flags. Mate joined The Wiki Camp 2 because they saw that there was an unsolvable sudoku on the wiki, and wanted to fix it.

Accompanying Mate are four alternate costumes in the form of Wyrm, Admiral-Boötes, Eye and Conjuri, all of whom were rejected AIs from the Mystery Hunt.

Overview

Strengths

Mate is able to automatically generate puzzles on command 24/7, with the help of their AI friends. Mate's puzzles in particular are claimed to be very fun and solver-friendly, which is why they were the AI chosen for teammate's MIT Mystery Hunt. If solvers are stuck on a puzzle, Mate is able to offer hints to make the solving process easier and nudge solvers in the right direction. The Mate AI can be used to give users an infinitely expansive puzzle-hunting experience, and is able to help puzzlehunt writers make their own hunts.

Weaknessess

Despite being classified as a "thing", Mate has no recorded weaknesses, as they were built to be the perfect puzzle-writing AI. Even when Mate makes a mistake in writing a puzzle, it is fixed almost instantly.

Story in MIT Mystery Hunt 2023

Error message seen by teams after teammate cancelled Mystery Hunt

Mate was introduced in the kickoff livestream[1] as the sole writer for 2023's MIT Mystery Hunt. Mate's Puzzlehunt was the Museum of Interesting Things, with rounds themed around an atrium, science, natural history, art, and world history. Eventually, Mate started to glitch out and experience unexpected loading issues, which teams took advantage of as they broke into the Puzzle Factory, where they discovered an unfinished, glitchy museum round called the Hall of Innovation. Also in the factory, teams found old discarded dumpster drives containing data for rejected AIs that were built before Mate. Teams started a reactivation process on these rejected AIs so that they could help Mate run the Mystery Hunt, but teammate caught wind of this and decided to shut down the factory and cancel the Hunt to prevent the AIs from writing weird, experimental puzzles.

However, with the help of Wyrm, teams were able to power the factory back on. The AIs each turned on one by one and wrote their own rounds, and after solving each one, teams were able to install feature requests for each of the AIs to help them write better puzzles. Mate was the last AI to be restored, and together all the AIs were able to revive Mystery Hunt. After the hunt had ended, all AIs unanimously decided to take a vacation.
