The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union of 27 states representing 449 million Europeans. There used to be 28, but things happened.
The EU started with six Western European states: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Throughout time, more and more states joined. On May 1, 2004, a whopping 10 states—Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia—joined the EU at once.
