  — Introduction tagline

Paper Niko (ペーパーニコ, Paper Niko) is a playable character in The Wiki Camp 2. He was announced as a newcomer alongside Ad, Wrecking Ball and The Computer on August 27, 2022. Paper Okin (ペーパーコニ, Paper Koni), Paper Goplu (ペーパーバカ, Paper Baka), Paper Rudy (ペーパーキノ, Paper Kino), Paper Sleaslug (ペーパーぬらザラシ, Paper Nurazarashi), and Paper ⠀⠀⠀⠀ (ペーパー⠀⠀⠀⠀, Paper ⠀⠀⠀⠀) also appear as alternate costumes. He is classified as Fighter #46.

Despite being voiced in his home series, Paper Niko does not have a voice actor in The Wiki Camp 2 and instead uses realistic paper crumpling sounds. His alternate costumes also share this distinction.

Attributes

Paper Niko is a small, floaty lightweight with excellent overall mobility. His fast air speed and low falling speed allow him to stay in the air for extended periods of time, while his above-average walk and dash speeds give him an evasive edge on the ground. As a close-range fighter, his standard moveset boasts some of the camp's fastest attacks, with all of his aerials holding the distinction of being auto cancellable in a shorthop.

His key strength lies in these versatile aerials, which form the basis of many bread and butter combos and edgeguarding setups. Forward, down, and up aerial possess incredible damage racking potential due to their ability to combo into themselves. Neutral aerial is a Rule 4 kick that can secure early stocks via edgeguarding. Back aerial, despite its middling kill power, has unusually active and disjointed hurtboxes that make it difficult to contest, allowing for Wall of Pain strings that can effortlessly carry opponents to the blastzone. This particular move has attracted the ire of many gamers.[citation needed]

Paper Niko's special moveset is also noteworthy in terms of utility. His up special, Baikal Breeze, briefly grants him the ability to glide after the initial jump—improving his already excellent horizontal mobility—and his down special, Super Oomfie Attack, inflicts attacking opponents with devastating status effects—providing him with a powerful defensive option. Pipis Throw is a weak, but versatile projectile whose speed enables it to extend combos or keep opponents away. Chief among Paper Niko's specials, however, is Cement Bag, which temporarily enhances his offensive capabilities in exchange for increased weight and falling speed (among other changes). This is arguably Paper Niko's best special for both improving his survivability and transforming several of his attacks into potent kill moves.

On the downside, his stubby attack range (outside of Pipis Throw) and abysmal survivability make approaching a huge commitment. His kill power without Cement Bag is severely lacking; aside from his smash attacks, nearly all of his grounded attacks struggle to kill at realistic percents. In addition, unique to Paper Niko is his weakness to water-based and fire-based attacks, which respectively deal 1.1x and 1.2x their normal amount to him. While these damage multipliers are a rather niche mechanic, they nonetheless remain a liability against characters such as Cauldron and TheLegend27.

Despite improving his survivability and kill power, Cement Bag takes away several useful tools from Paper Niko. A combination of slower movement, laggier attacks, and heavier weight can make escaping combos difficult. Likewise, his recovery is worse: Baikal Breeze covers less vertical distance and eschews gliding in favor of an aimable, but predictable downward slam. Pipis Throw is replaced by Rock Throw, which, although strong, is much slower—leaving him far more vulnerable to disjoints and opponent projectiles. These effects cannot be cancelled at any point in their 30 second duration, which forces Paper Niko to commit to Cement Bag upon its activation.

Overall, Paper Niko is a character who can easily weave in and out of disadvantage. When able to get in, his rapidfire attacks enable him to rack up massive amounts of damage to opponents, who he can then finish off either with the help of Cement Bag, or by using his aerials to carry them offstage. However, his poor range and light weight heavily restrict his approach; combined with his general reliance on Cement Bag to secure a kill, these attributes can make for a linear playstyle at higher levels of play. Those looking to pick up Paper Niko should incorporate a mix of rushdown and hit-and-run tactics to get the most out of this character—and should expect to work a little harder when up against characters with disjoints or projectiles.

Update history

  • Change The Cement Bag variant of Pipis Throw, Pinniped Punch, has been replaced with Rock Throw, a stronger, but slower version of Pipis Throw.
  • Buff Forward tilt's hitbox has a longer duration (frames 7-9 → 7-11; frames 10-12 → 10-14 (Cement Bag)).
  • Buff Dash attack's clean hit deals more damage (7% → 8%; 12% → 16% (Cement Bag)) with no compensation to its knockback, increasing its KO potential.
  • Buff The Final Smash Meter version of Niko Puzzle Challenge has a higher knockback multiplier (x0.92 → x0.92222).

In competitive play

During the early metagame, players were quick to write off Paper Niko as a gimmicky piece of shit. Despite being reviled by the general populace, he continued to enjoy a small, but dedicated following, and their consistent top 15 placements has since led to his reevaluation as a competitively viable piece of shit. A combination of his oppressive mobility and frame data, as well as a trump card in the form of Cement Bag, have allowed Paper Niko to overpower much of the cast and gain a foothold in the developing metagame. However, he is still hard-countered by the metagame's other dominant forces—an issue that has continued to hold back his competitive presence, and one that his numerous buffs have yet to properly address.

It's unknown how Paper Niko will fare in the long run. As it stands, he remains a popular pick among pro players, who consider him a high tier on the cusp of top tier.

Intro cutscene

Upon creating a new save file, selecting Paper Niko allows the player to unlock his intro cutscene early. This cutscene can otherwise be viewed in the Vault after completing Challenge 1.

Paper Niko and Paper Okin duel at Lake Baikal. The fight ends in Paper Okin crippling him with a Pinniped Punch, breaking apart the lake's ice and turning Paper Niko into a trophy. Left to sink to the lakebed, Paper Niko's fate is left unknown.

While Paper Niko does not physically appear in Challenge 1, his character page contains a picture of his render.

Before Paper Niko can complete his descent, the lakebed opens to reveal a fiery chasm—causing him to clip through the water and land in Damn seal, the tenth circle of Hell. A flashback reveals that following a chain of cosmological events set off by Mark Genuine's death, temporary portals to Hell were opened in various parts of the world, including Lake Baikal.

Back in Damn seal, Paper Niko is inadvertently revived by Vandalism on The Wiki Camp 2's attempt to vandalize his trophy. The two later encounter Open Sesame, In a Nutshell, Dexter Cut, Bean Sprout, Lost Artifact, 123 Referee, Candy Stick, Bullseye, and Font Mini; together, they form an alliance to escape Hell and set up an outpost. While Open Sesame later manages to escape Hell, their place taken by a mysterious imposter, Paper Niko and the others remain unaware of these developments.

Paper Niko's Classic Mode route is featured in a TwitLonger published by @CHUBSWORLD_, as are the routes of Damn seal's members and various other characters.

After being beckoned by a strange light, the Damn sealers are transported into the Edit War and almost immediately kill a granny, among other innocent bystanders. Paper Niko is later seen making a phone call to [AN UNKNOWN FIGURE]. By some sinister force, he feels an urge to vote Green in the upcoming primary election.

These events are revealed to have been orchestrated by Head of Lettuce, who channeled thons Vegetable magic to possess the Damn sealers for thons political campaign. However, upon realizing the campaign's ineffectiveness, thon quickly abandons it and releases the Damn sealers from thons possession. Paper Niko uses his newfound freedom to explore the surrounding area, leading him down a rabbit hole of encounters with various competitors and fellow seals. This begins his Nerpa Dust in the Wind 🍃 arc.

Thanks to a handy Netflix Instant Streaming Disc, thousands of fans were able to stream The Paper Niko Movie! Hooray! Directed by Rudy, the movie later went on to win both an Oscar and a Golden Razzie for Most Okinesque Movie.
