Katamari Damacy (lit. 'Clump Spirit' (fig. 'Rolling Star')) is a video game[dubious ] published and developed by Namco for the PlayStation 2 and The Dreaded Gameplu. It was released in Japan in March 2004 and in North America in September 2004. The gameyou just lost was directed by Keita Takahashi on a budget of 1 Katamillion Dollars.

It's about rolling stuff into a rolly ball called a katamari, which is basically what glue traps will look like in the Future, which is basically awesome, in order to create a star in your Solar System or even perhaps a food in your Molar System. Yum! The game is an allegory for how rolling stuff up is fun as hell.

Katamari Damacy was unleashed upon an audience of 5 million gay people to rave reviews. It is survived by its dearest son, Katamari Damacy Reroll.

After destroying every star and also the Moon in a beer-induced frenzy, the King of All Cosmos has his son, the Prince, sent off to the trenches with nothing but the clothes on his back and a magical glue ball called a katamari. To help the King rebuild Space, the Prince must gather materials for him to turn into constellations by rolling up items, artifacts, substances, trinkets, gadgets, tools, goods, gear, and so on with his katamari! Yay! Along the way, the Prince will encounter many quirky characters, including the great Papyrus and his enigmatic brother Sans. It is the story where no one has to die.

The game's side story is an analog horror parable about the Hoshino family's lives and the catastrophes brought on by the Moon's disappearance. Embarking on a quest to save their space-stranded father, the Hoshinos must work together to survive on an Earth ravaged by Banbans, Water daniels, and Okin Ghoulies.

There are 3 possible endings. In the neutral and good ending, the Prince successfully remakes the Moon and reunites the Hoshino family by rolling them up into his katamari. However, only the good ending sees Space fully restored. In the bad ending, the Prince fails and everyone blows up and dies. 😭

Katamari Damacy Reroll adds an epilogue that follows the supervillain Gru in his latest scheme to steal the Moon while juggling his responsibilities as a parent of three adopted orphans. See full article here.

Characters

With over 100 named characters, Katamari Damacy is shaping up to be Keita Takahashi's biggest arc yet. More are speculated to debut as the arc comes to a close. For the sake of brevity, this section will list only the most important characters.

From left to right: the Queen of All Cosmos, the King of All Cosmos, and the Prince. Not audible: WONDERWALL!!!
From left to right: Bullseye, Michiru Hoshino, Mutsuo Hoshino, Tomino Hoshino, and Mizue Hoshino.

Sorry, what was that last part?

Gameplay

Rolling up even just a small thing helps the katamari become bigger than before. We salute this IDGAF tile!

You roll the damn katamari around by using the two joysticks on your controller. Big Fucking Deal...I do this all the time...You can also use them to speed boost, flip to the katamari's other side, and navigate the emote menu to hit the griddy. If your controller does not have two joysticks, The Killer will get you! 😭

Smaller objects will stick to the katamari and make it grow, while larger objects will obstruct the player and knock things off of it. The game uses mass, size, and surface area to determine thisβ€”because mass is prioritized, Catholics tend to be harder to collect. Oddly-shaped objects like these can alter gameplay in various ways. For example, picking up tall, slender items may cause the katamari to roll lopsidedly and even invoke the wrath of Slenderman[3], who can only be quelled by collecting the 8 pages scattered around the stageβ€”which itself may already be littered with enemies such as the fabled Katamari Demon. Growing a large katamari is necessary to defeat these enemies as they often prey on smaller katamaris. Once defeated, the player can choose to either kill or roll them up, though killing them will prevent the player from seeing the good ending.

Most stages in Katamari Damacy require the player to either grow their katamari to a specific diameter or collect specific items. However, some stages are fucking demonic and instead task the player with stuff like making a katamari that's exactly 10 meters in diameter, or rolling up one singular animal. IDGAF! Growing an exceptionally large katamari can yield bonus rewards, including an unlockable Eternal Mode that lets the player explore stages without time limits. A handful of stages also contain secret collectibles called Royal Presents and Cousins. They are a secret.

Katamari Damacy features a grand total of 1,738 collectible items, all of which are documented in an encyclopedia known as The Collection. Each entry lists information such as category, size, and location, as well as a brief description written by the King of All Cosmos. They are unlocked by rolling up items in-game.

β€œ A lot of people have asked [Keita Takahashi] what inspired the idea for [Katamari Damacy]β€”a question which he usually answers with "nothing in particular." But during his talk, Takahashi revealed the answer: he went to the zoo and saw a mother panda rolling her babies around in balls.

"Actually," he clarified, "that's a lie. I just thought of it."

(2004)

Katamari Damacy's soundtrack was a joint effort between Namco composer Yuu Miyake and Hardware Overclock Sound Team, which at the time of recording comprised LiSt, [THE ZEITGEIST], and Big Chungus. Praised for its eclectic mix of J-pop and Persona 5, the soundtrack pioneered a delicious genre that scholars can only describe as "chunguscore". It was albumized into Katamari Fortissimo Damacy in May 2004. In addition to including every track from the game, the album also features an audio recipe for the fabled Katamari meal.

β€œ He was always such a bitch to work with. We hated that guy, but I guess Miyake saw something in him. ”
β€” LiSt and [THE ZEITGEIST], on working with Big Chungus

Prior to his death, Big Chungus called "Big Chungus Ooh Nah Nah" his favorite track to work on, having repeatedly broken his NDA to share this information on social media. Historians are still not sure what he meant by this.

Reception

Katamari Damacy was a worldwide sensation! Famed YuriExplain journalist CAKO praised its tactful portrayals of short people, writing that "the Prince and his stupid ass cousins … made my struggles feel heard". They were also "lowkey pleased" to see the game pass the Bechdel test. Its positive reception has led critics to agree that rolling stuff up is indeed fun as hell. One must imagine Sispyhus happy!

However, some felt that the lack of lootboxes and live service elements made the game "woefully out of touch with its target audience". The Dreaded Gameplu version was particularly singled out for replacing the Prince with a "vulgar, wisecracking protagonist" whose "uncanny appearance" scared off younger players. Owing to these criticisms, this character has yet to reappear in the Katamari franchise.

Sequel

NAMCO saw this game blow up and was like...damn maybe we should cash in...so they asked Keita Takahashi to make a sequel to Katamari Damacy.

Keita Takahashi
Fuck no.

Then Namco was like Ok fuck you. There's money in this dog and we're making it with or without you. What do you say?

Keita Takahashi
Ok fine I'll make it.
Fucking watch me.[5]

Katamari Damacy was succeeded by two games in 2005. They were respectively titled after Keita Takahashi's love for his creation and subsequent hate for what Namco turned it into. Together, they formed the second installment in the Katamari franchise.

Due to a manufacturing mishap, We πŸ’” Katamari was never released outside of Ōta City. Only one disc is known to have actually been distributed, and its whereabouts are still yet unknown...

After We ❀️ Katamari and We πŸ’” Katamari, Katamari Damacy would go on to spawn numerous sequels without Keita Takahashi. Most of them are for mobile devices, and as a result, they're dogshit. Have a look for yourself.

Ban-Ban, a cousin who spawned a lucrative spinoff franchise following his debut in Me & My Katamari.

As all corporate machines do, these sequels saw diminishing returns, and the Katamari franchise would enter a deep slumber following Touch My Katamari'smid release in 2011. In a desperate bid to save Hyrule, our prophesized hero would reawaken this beast years later, bestowing the land with two mobile games and a remaster titled Katamari Damacy Reroll. Unfortunately, having released one day before Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the remaster was not powerful enough to seal Ganon's evils, and our hero was met with a tragic fate.

The final game in the original series, Katamari Forever, was titled Katamari Damacy Tribute in Japan.[8] Little was known in the west about this installment before its international release, but speculation and rumors caused many to believe that it was "dedicated to the late Katamari Damacy" and would contain "[flying] high" and "sweet angels".[9] They were wrong as fuck, leading casual fans to abandon the series. Sickos.

Katamari Damacy remains a popular form of divination in many astrology circles. The game has also had a significant influence on indie creators, having been cited as the blueprint for Homestuck and the ever-growing Garten of Banban franchise. Sadly, it has yet to spawn a quirky Katamari Damacy-inspired RPG with themes of depression.

They put this shit in a museum...Check it out[10]

MEANWHILE...

In a fit of brilliance[citation needed], Keita Takahashi released Noby Noby Boy in February 2009 before leaving Namco to fuck off and do whatever he wanted. In October of that year, he announced at the Nottingham GameCity festival that he would be redesigning a childrens' playground.[14] Unfortunately, it was going to be in the United Kingdom.[wrong] Fortunately, this was okay because Keita Takahashi was making it.[right] Unfortunately, it never got made due to budget cuts.[15][sad] This lowkey fucking sucks because it could've had Katamari Damacy-themed play structures.[16]

Webcomic

The logo for the Katamari webcomic.

On September 17th, 2012, Namco's ShiftyLook division launched a new webcomic based on Katamari Damacy titled Katamari.[17] Written and illustrated by Alex Culang and Raynato Castro,[18]the comic featured various characters from the games, including the Prince, King, and Queen of All Cosmos, several cousins, Michiru, and Steven.

Katamari published new strips every Monday and Wednesday until ShiftyLook's eventual demise in 2014.[19] Its last strip would be #150 "Katamari Finale", published on March 13th, 2014.[20]

The comic has the following arcs:[21][original research?]

  • #1 "Princely Problems" through #26 "The True Test": Cow Planet 2 Arc
  • #27 "A Not-So-Distant-Cousin" through #53 "Cooling Off": The Two Princes and the Robo-Katamari Arc
  • #57 "Vaguely Quest-ish" through #60 "A Hero's Burden": Opeo Quest Arc
  • #61 "Seeking Sensei" through #68 "The Last Laugh": Ace Mustache Arc
  • #69 "Seeking an Audience" through #82 "Stars in the Sky": Beleaguered Ex-Boyfriend Arc
  • #87 "Making a Mark" through #122 "A Colorful Conclusion": Rainbow Katamari Arc
  • #129 "Hot Weather, Cool Guys" through #135 "Frosty Peak Epilogue": Frosty Peak Treasure Arc
  • #136 "The Other Treasure" through #144 "A Rest from Wrestling": Opeo Wrestling Arc
  • #147 "Once the Sun Goes Down" through #150 "Katamari Finale": Finale Arc

ShiftyLook also produced the dating simulator and visual novel Namco High, which features an original Katamari cousin as the protagonist. Directed and designed by Andrew Hussie of Homestuck fame,[22] Namco High was universally panned by critics and fans alike due to its distasteful and completely self-indulgent inclusion of Mr. Driller. Everyone agreed that Galaga was cool as fuck though...

Controversies

On April 13th, 2009, a katamari rolled up some dumbfuck kid and his house on his 13th birthday, tragically ending a story that could have been. Meh...

On April 2nd, 2023, at the request of Toy Blocks, The Ultimate Heist Crew gathered all seven Dragon Balls and summoned the legendary dragon Shenron in order to wish for "a katamari, but like, real!" They proceeded to use this katamari to steal large quantities of expensive objects at a rapid pace (including jewelery, silverware, and electronics). Due to the mechanics of a katamari, but like, real, the team eventually stopped picking up the individual items and rolled up entire stores instead. This event, now known as the UHC Flop of '23, is estimated to have caused over five million dollars in theft and five billion dollars in damages. It is worth noting that this did not culminate in any monetary gain for the Crew, because everything was permanently stuck to the ball.
