Mali is a country in West Africa. It once housed a mighty empire, once led by one of the richest people on the planet. Many ancient cities are still intact, including the world-famous Timbuktu. Likewise, the capital city of Bamako has been inhabited since Paleolithic times, though it hadn't been a major hub until the 17th century.
