Colombia is a Latin American country named after Christopher Columbus. It is mostly within South America, but there are also insular regions in North America. Colombia used to be a Spanish colony (alongside the Netherlands), as well as the larger Gran Colombia, whose flag explains why Colombia's flag is similar to former Gran Colombia-mates Venezuela and Ecuador.
Colombia is a megadiverse country, having the highest level of alpha diversity per square mile in the world, and the home of more butterfly and orchid species than anywhere else on the planet. It is also home to Avianca, the first airline founded in the Americas, and 2010 FIFA World Cup star Shakira.
